Moscow Calls for Greater Security Cooperation Within Expanding BRICS Bloc
Russia has called for BRICS to play a greater role in addressing national and international security challenges, arguing that the rapidly expanding bloc must become a more influential platform for coordinating responses to emerging global threats.
The comments come amid growing geopolitical tensions, ongoing conflicts in several regions, increasing cyber and information warfare risks, and concerns over global food, energy, and economic security. Russian officials have emphasized that BRICS countries should deepen cooperation on security matters while strengthening their collective voice in global affairs.
Speaking during a gathering of senior security officials from BRICS member states in New Delhi, Russian representatives stressed that the organization has become an increasingly important forum for discussing terrorism, regional conflicts, economic stability, technological risks, and strategic security issues.
BRICS Expands Beyond Economic Cooperation
Originally established as an economic grouping, BRICS has steadily broadened its agenda to include political, diplomatic, and security-related cooperation.
The bloc now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and several newer members admitted during the organization’s recent expansion. Together, the member states represent a significant share of the global population, economic output, natural resources, and energy production.
Russian officials argue that the changing international environment requires stronger coordination among emerging powers, particularly as global institutions face mounting pressure from geopolitical rivalries and regional conflicts.
According to Moscow, BRICS should serve as an important mechanism for promoting stability, supporting multilateralism, and addressing challenges that affect the Global South.
Security Challenges Moving to the Forefront
The call for greater BRICS involvement in security affairs comes as member states increasingly focus on issues that extend beyond trade and development.
Recent discussions among BRICS security officials have focused on:
- Counterterrorism cooperation
- Cybersecurity threats
- Artificial intelligence governance
- Energy security
- Food security
- Cross-border crime
- Regional conflicts and diplomatic mediation
- Protection of critical infrastructure
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently urged BRICS nations to strengthen cooperation on strategic resources, energy security, food security, and emerging technologies, warning that traditional and non-traditional security threats are becoming increasingly interconnected.
Officials attending the security meetings also highlighted the need for greater collaboration on combating terrorism and managing risks associated with rapidly evolving technologies such as artificial intelligence.
Russia Pushes for Stronger Strategic Coordination
Russia has repeatedly advocated for closer coordination among BRICS members on issues affecting economic and national security.
Earlier this year, Moscow proposed the creation of joint food reserves among BRICS countries to help mitigate risks stemming from disruptions to global supply chains and instability in key shipping routes. Russian officials argued that rising geopolitical tensions could threaten global food and fertilizer markets, making greater cooperation among member states increasingly important.
The Kremlin has also promoted cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, financial resilience, technological development, and strategic resource management as part of a broader effort to strengthen collaboration among BRICS nations.
Not a Military Alliance, Moscow Insists
Despite calls for deeper security coordination, Russian officials have repeatedly stated that BRICS is not intended to become a military alliance.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov previously stressed that the bloc was never designed as a collective defense organization and has no plans to evolve into a military alliance with mutual defense obligations. Instead, Moscow says BRICS should function as a platform for dialogue, coordination, and cooperation on common challenges facing member countries.
Analysts note that BRICS members maintain diverse foreign policy priorities and strategic interests, making the formation of a formal military structure unlikely in the near future.
Growing Influence on the Global Stage
As BRICS continues to expand and attract interest from countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, its role in shaping discussions on global governance is expected to grow.
Supporters of the bloc argue that it provides emerging economies with a stronger voice in international affairs and helps promote a more multipolar world order. Critics, however, question whether the group can maintain unity given the diverse interests of its members.
For Russia, the answer appears clear: BRICS should evolve into a more influential force not only in economics and development but also in addressing the security challenges that increasingly define the modern geopolitical landscape.
With conflicts, technological competition, and economic uncertainty reshaping global politics, Moscow believes the bloc has an opportunity to play a much larger role in safeguarding national and international security in the years ahead.
