King Charles Will Not Live at Buckingham Palace After Renovations, Palace Officials Confirm

British monarch to remain at Clarence House as Buckingham Palace continues its role as the monarchy’s ceremonial headquarters

King Charles III will not move into Buckingham Palace once its extensive £369 million ($487 million) refurbishment is completed in 2027, ending nearly two centuries in which the palace served as the British monarch’s primary residence.

Royal officials announced that King Charles and Queen Camilla will continue living at nearby Clarence House, their London residence since before Charles ascended the throne. The decision was made after what officials described as careful consideration and is intended to allow greater public access to Buckingham Palace while maintaining its role as the operational and ceremonial heart of the monarchy.

Although the King will not reside there permanently, Buckingham Palace will remain the venue for state banquets, investitures, official receptions, diplomatic events and other royal engagements. Private rooms will also be available for the King and Queen during official duties and occasional overnight stays.

The refurbishment, which began in 2017, has focused on replacing aging electrical wiring, plumbing and heating systems while modernizing the historic building for future generations. The project is expected to conclude next year.

Alongside the announcement, palace officials disclosed for the first time that King Charles paid £12.9 million ($17 million) in income and capital gains tax during the 2024–25 financial year. The move forms part of the monarch’s efforts to increase transparency surrounding royal finances amid growing public scrutiny.

Officials also confirmed that the Sovereign Grant the public funding that supports the monarchy’s official duties will be reduced to £100 million annually from 2027, following a review requested by the King.

The decision marks a significant break with royal tradition. Buckingham Palace has served as the principal London residence of Britain’s monarchs since Queen Victoria took up residence in 1837. Under King Charles, however, it will continue primarily as the monarchy’s headquarters rather than the sovereign’s permanent home.
