Israel’s military says it has destroyed a significant network of underground infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, in one of the latest operations despite a fragile peace framework aimed at ending months of cross-border hostilities.
The Israeli military announced on Sunday that its forces had dismantled tunnels, weapons storage facilities, and other underground sites allegedly used by the Iran-backed Lebanese armed group. The operation was carried out in areas close to the Israeli-Lebanese border and forms part of Israel’s ongoing efforts to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding its military capabilities.
Israeli Military Targets Underground Facilities
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the underground infrastructure posed a direct security threat to northern Israeli communities and was intended to facilitate future attacks.
Military officials said engineering units, supported by intelligence assets, located and destroyed the sites during recent operations. The IDF released footage and images that it said showed troops uncovering tunnels and demolishing underground facilities.
Israel has repeatedly stated that it will not allow Hezbollah to re-establish military positions near its northern border, arguing that the group’s presence violates previous international agreements and threatens regional stability.
Fragile Peace Deal Under Pressure
The latest operation comes only days after Israel and Lebanon signed a U.S.-mediated framework peace agreement intended to reduce tensions and pave the way for a more permanent ceasefire.
While large-scale fighting has largely subsided, sporadic incidents and military operations have continued, highlighting the fragility of the arrangement.
Lebanese authorities have not immediately commented on the specific Israeli claims regarding the destruction of underground infrastructure. Hezbollah has also not issued a detailed response to the operation.
Months of Conflict Devastated Border Communities
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensified following the outbreak of the Gaza war in late 2023, with near-daily exchanges of fire across the Israeli-Lebanese border.
The fighting displaced tens of thousands of civilians on both sides of the frontier and caused extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and agricultural areas in southern Lebanon and northern Israel.
Israel has repeatedly carried out airstrikes and ground operations targeting Hezbollah’s weapons depots, command centres, and military infrastructure, while Hezbollah has launched rockets and drones into Israeli territory.
International Concerns Over Renewed Escalation
The international community has welcomed recent diplomatic efforts to stabilize the border but remains concerned that isolated incidents could trigger another round of large-scale conflict.
The United States, France, and the United Nations have urged both parties to fully implement the terms of the ceasefire framework and avoid actions that could undermine ongoing negotiations.
Security analysts warn that despite the latest peace efforts, tensions remain high and the border situation could deteriorate rapidly if either side perceives a significant security threat.
For now, Israel’s latest operation underscores the continuing volatility of the Israeli-Lebanese frontier and the challenges facing diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting peace in the region.
