U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Will Scharf, the current White House staff secretary, will become the new White House counsel and assistant to the president, effective September 1.

Scharf will take over as the administration’s top lawyer after serving as staff secretary, where he has overseen the administrative flow of documents and information to the Oval Office.

He has also led the National Capital Planning Commission, which approved plans for the construction of a new White House ballroom.

Trump said current White House Counsel David Warrington will leave the administration to enter the private sector.

Warrington previously served as Trump’s personal counsel and worked as a lawyer for Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign before becoming White House counsel.

The appointment places Scharf in a key position at a time when the Trump administration continues to face major legal and constitutional issues surrounding its domestic and foreign policy agenda.

The transition is expected to take effect at the beginning of September, with Scharf assuming responsibility for advising the president and coordinating the White House’s legal strategy.
