Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to visit New York City to commemorate victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, during a high-profile diplomatic trip to the United States that underscores the enduring ties between London and Washington.
The visit forms part of a four-day state trip to the U.S., during which the royal couple will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the National 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan, honouring the nearly 2,800 people killed in the attacks.
Tribute at Ground Zero
King Charles and Queen Camilla are expected to meet first responders, survivors and families of victims at the memorial site, in what is expected to be one of the most emotionally significant moments of their U.S. tour.
The ceremony comes ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks later this year and highlights the continued global remembrance of one of the most defining tragedies of the 21st century.
New York City officials, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other dignitaries, are also expected to attend the event.
Royal Visit Across Key U.S. Cities
The New York stop follows engagements in Washington, D.C., where King Charles met U.S. President Donald Trump, addressed Congress and attended a state dinner at the White House.
The royal tour also includes visits to Virginia before concluding back in Washington, marking one of the most extensive U.S. state visits undertaken by a British monarch in recent years.
According to Buckingham Palace, the trip reflects efforts to reinforce diplomatic, cultural and economic ties between the United Kingdom and the United States at a time of global uncertainty.
Camilla’s Cultural Engagements
While in New York, Queen Camilla is also scheduled to visit the New York Public Library, where she will contribute a new “Roo” doll to its renowned Winnie-the-Pooh collection, marking the 100th anniversary of the beloved character.
The visit also includes a reception supporting literary and charitable initiatives linked to the Queen’s Reading Room, one of her key patronages.
Strengthening UK–US Relations
King Charles is expected to use the visit to highlight shared democratic values, historical ties and ongoing cooperation between the two nations, particularly in areas such as security, culture and humanitarian work.
The trip marks the first visit to New York by a reigning British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II’s visit in 2010.
Outlook
As the royal couple continues their U.S. tour, the 9/11 memorial ceremony is expected to stand out as a defining moment of reflection and solidarity.
The visit reinforces the symbolic role of the monarchy in international diplomacy, blending remembrance, cultural engagement and statecraft at a time of evolving global challenges.
